I can’t really be the only one
Who’s tried to begin life anew,
Chasing dreams in a foreign city
Unfamiliar people to come home to.
Warm and gracious on the surface
Though never fully letting you in,
Their smiles remind of another life
Where people felt like your own kin.
Seasons change, and you do too,
But old fears resurface to say hello
Will you find your real self here?
Embrace the journey and truly grow?
What happens to the folks you left
Waving goodbye to you at the port,
Will your father live a healthy life?
Will your mother miss you more?
What happens to them close friends?
Do they move on, think you have too?
Or will they clasp tightly to the version
They remember fondly of them and you?
Life is transient and memories fade
What was yesterday could slowly dull
Before all you have is your new life
And new people to fill the lull.
I stand up now, to my own surprise
Embrace old fears and some new,
It’s all the same; life’s one big circle,
Past and future flow in me and through.
